Company

I am thirsty for quiet,

For loneliness,

To remind me that I like to be in company.

The more you talk,

The further I retreat,

Into the ink-black pool inside,

Where the stillness is absolute,

And I am sitting in a chair,

Staring unseeing into the water,

Gathering secrets into my dark corners.

I’m animated like a puppet,

My limbs are lethargic,

Reluctantly following the signals from my brain,

Expressions follow actions,

Dredged up from a bank of emoticons,

And dashed upon my face.

I am thirsty for quiet,

Like an addict slurping it up,

From the ink-black pool inside of me,

I don’t want to come back out.
